James is a 3rd Degree Black Belt with 27 years of experience and part of Will-Machado BJJ Australasia under BJJ pioneer and Australia's first BJJ Coral Belt, John B. Will.
James is also affiliated with Robinson Jiu Jitsu under Head Coach and close friend, 4th Degree Black Belt Craig Robinson.
James has trained and competed in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania and the United Kingdom, as well as training in New Zealand and the U.S.A.
He opened the first full-time Jiu Jitsu Academy in the NSW Northern Rivers in 2010 and has a deep connection to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the local BJJ community. He regularly trains under David Moreira Soares at Portal BJJ in Ballina.
